Chocolate Green Smoothie - Uniques Ways to Drinking Your Greens
by Beverly

Beverly is wondering if there is such a thing as a Chocolate Green Smoothie with little to no fruit. Let's look at her question.
Question: Are there recipes using greens in smoothies without using fruit. I am feeling like I'm overdoing it on fruit. What about a chocolate green smoothie? Maybe using chocolate almond milk, but then what else?
Answer: Interesting question! What are your reasons to keep away from fruit? Is it the sugar content? Or would you just like to try something new that you haven't tried before? There is nothing wrong with trying out new recipes.
If you are wanting to avoid the sugars in the fruit, there is a lot of sugar in the packaged chocolate almond milk. 30 grams of sugar for 12 ounces of milk to be exact. This is about how much sugar is in the green smoothies with fruit. Plus... you get the fiber, antioxidants, micro nutrients, and much much more from fruit. Where chocolate almond milk isn't as nutrient dense as the fruit.
So... instead of using chocolate almond milk, why not use more subtle fruits and add cacao or cocoa powder to give that green smoothie a chocolaty flavor?
Here is a chocolate spinach smoothie example:
Purple Chocolate
This smoothie is very yummy! It is purple, but it tastes like chocolate.
1 banana, ripe and peeled
5-8 oz spinach, fresh
2 dates, pitted
1 cup blueberries, frozen
1 tablespoon cacao, powdered
5 ice cubes
1 1/2 cups water
Pour the water in first. Then blend the banana, spinach, and dates with the water. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.
Serves 1-2
If you are just wanting to try something new, you can try using any of my chocolate smoothie recipes. Just add a handful of mild greens, like spinach. Keep in mind... The color will look a little odd with the blended greens and chocolate.
Yummy Chocolate Spinach Smoothie

1/2 cup almonds, raw
7 dates, pitted
1/2 tsp stevia
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 tablespoon cacao

Blend the first 7 ingredients until smooth. Add the ice and blend again. Serves 1-2
I hope that this helps answer your questions!
