Kale Smoothie
Want to increase your healthy omega 3's while drinking a rainbow of other nutrients? Try this powerful kale green smoothie that Meredith just shared with us.
The only thing I changed was using frozen strawberries to chill the smoothie. And to get the flax seeds fully ground up... try grinding them in a coffee grinder before adding it to the smoothie.
Meredith, thank you for submitting your recipe and picture. :)
Happy Blending!

Green n' Flax Smoothie
1 bunch green kale (6-8 leaves)
2 navel oranges
8 strawberries
1 cup green grapes
1/4 cup golden flax seeds
If using a low quality blender, blend the kale leaves with the oranges first (and/or a little water). Then add the grapes and strawberries and blend. Finally, add the flax seeds and blend until seeds are no longer whole (for more nutrient absorption). Enjoy!
This is a pretty advanced taste, especially with the flax seeds. It also tends to be a little grainy in texture. If a beginner, use less kale and flax seeds.
Pear Kale Green Smoothie
4 pears
4-5 kale leaves
handful of mint leaves
2 cups of water
Blend all ingredients until completely smooth.

High Fiber - Protein Kale Smoothie
2-4 kales
1 banana
1 apple
1 cup vanilla soy milk
1 scoop of soy protein shake mix
1 cup of carrots
6 ice cubes
Blend all together!
FYI: A number of the "vegetables" you list as ingredients for your fruitless smoothies are actually fruits. Not all fruits are sweet, but they have seeds with the potential to grow into a new plant - avocados, cucumbers, tomato, lemon, persimmon, quince, pepper, chile.
In contrast, rhubarb, often used in pies and jellies, is a vegetable. Does your friend's doctor mean no fruit or no sweet/high-sugar produce? I am concerned if it is a nutrient, other than sugar, in the fruit of plants that will contribute to cancer.

Amanda's Tropical Green Smoothie
Mixture of Kale and Chard
10-12 Strawberries
1-2 cup of Pineapple
1/2 cup Papaya
Coconut Milk to taste (up to 1/2 cup)
1-2 tbsp Freshly ground flax seed and sesame seed
Water if needed
(option: take out some pineapple, add more papaya and add some fresh mint and/or lime juice)

To shake things up I use milk instead of water in my smoothies. I also add flax seed and wheat germ to the above recipes. This adds extra fiber.
*DaNae's note: Milk (I use alternative milks like almond, rice, or hemp) is a great way to add extra calories to smoothies for people who need more calories. Adding nuts and seeds help as well. For instance... kids and athletic people need more calories because they burn more calories throughout the day. I use water in most of my smoothies because an average adult person usually eat too many calories. Thanks for your smoothie advice!!!

3 1 inch cubes of pineapple
2 kale leaves
4-5 frozen strawberries
1/2 frozen banana
Small handful of frozen blueberries
1/2 cup juice (we used Lakewood organic pomegranate)
2 tbs vanilla protein powder
I really think we could have added 2 more kale leaves, but this was our first kale smoothie. I wanted to make sure my 5 year old would drink it. It was the absolute best smoothie I have ever tasted. And I have had many smoothies in my life! I also just stuck the raw kale leaves in my regular blender (a waring pro) and it blended them without a problem.

I don't know if I can legally put it here, but... Oh My!!! Search for the green smoothie with kale and an orange and other fruit on the VitaMix site. Seriously, this is the best smoothie we have ever tried!!!
*DaNae's Note: That combination of fruit with kale sounds tasty! I do like using bananas and oranges with kale... But I've never tried that. I'll have to try this new recipe.
Thanks for sharing your green smoothie excitement!
Here is a smoothie recipe submitted by a reader. It is unique with the plums added. I usually never add plums to my smoothies (since they get so messy). Plus, it is hard to find perfectly ripe plums in my neck of the woods. But my plan is to keep a lookout for some juicy plums to create this tasty treat.
Plum Kale Smoothie
1 large ripe banana, peeled
10 kale leaves
2 Medium Plums*, fresh and pits removed
3/4 cup pineapple, frozen
1/2 cup strawberries, frozen
3/4 cup peaches, frozen
1 cup pure water
Pour the water and toss the banana, kale, and plums into the blender. Blend. Then add the frozen fruit and blend again until smooth. 1-2 servings
*DaNae's Note: I would think cutting and removing the pit from the plum over the blender is best. Then all of the juice from the plums will not be lost in the process.
Thank you for sharing your recipe!
Blueberry Cinnamon Smoothie
1 banana
handful of kale or spinach
1 cup blueberries (frozen)
1/2 cup raspberries (frozen)
1/2 cup skim milk
1-2 tsp. cinnamon
dash of nutmeg
dash of vanilla
Blend banana, milk, kale, spices, vanilla until smooth.
Add berries and blend until smooth (adding more milk if needed).
I sprinkle a little more cinnamon on top before serving.

I absolutely love pineapple in my smoothies! I had to try making a "green smoothie" with pineapple. I call this recipe my Kale Pina Colada Smoothie! I will have to tell you that it was quite good considering that there was a bunch of kale in it. I was really surprised how the kale blended nicely with the pineapple.
Kale Pina Colada Smoothie
3 large kale leaves
1 banana
1 pear
1 cup of frozen pineapple
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 cups water
6 ice cubes
1 teaspoon stevia
Since I have an older blender, I blended the kale with the water first. Then I did add the rest of the ingredients and blended it up until I knew there wasn't anymore kale or fruit pieces. It made about 5-6 cups of kale smoothie.

I like to keep my green smoothies simple. And I just use a cheap Osterizer blender that I bought way back in the 1990's and it still works! There is no need to get an expensive blender if you simply use your knife to cut the veggies into tiny pieces before you put them into the blender and use enough water or fruit juice to thoroughly blend and liquify all the veggies.
Purple Kale Smoothie
2-4 raw kale leaves with stems removed and leaves chopped into small pieces with a knife.
1 large raw carrot chopped into small pieces with a knife
1 medium to large raw beet chopped into small pieces with a knife
1 handful of frozen blueberries
Plus enough cold water or cold fruit juice to blend and liquify all the ingredients.
Crushed ice is optional. I prefer it without ice.
Consistency without ice will be less like a smoothie and more like a runny milkshake.
This recipe gives your body the nutrition it needs. I feel better after drink this.
*DaNae's Note: Thank you for posting your smoothie recipe and tips. People do need to know that they can still get the benefits from their smoothies with a cheaper blender. It just takes a bit of extra work. Thanks again!

Kale Parsley Smoothie
1 cup chopped kale leaves
handful of parsley
1 half banana
half cup apple juice
half cup ice
Blend all the ingredient in the blender until smooth. Enjoy!
*DaNae's Note: Thank you for sharing your smoothie recipe. I have used parsley. During the farmer's market in the summer, I buy a whole bucket of parsley for a few dollars and freeze it in serving sizes. I usually have enough for a couple of months.
